How does your
taxi meter calculate the fare?
Taxis in urban areas may or may not be connected with a meter. Metered taxis have uniform fares and very low chances of fraud. Complaints can be filed with the nearest Traffic Police Office with the taxi number. Rates may change over time.

Initial Charge
Fixed amount charged at the start of every trip. Day: Rs. 14 | Night: Rs. 21. This is the minimum fare regardless of distance.
Distance Fare
Charged every 200 metres. Day: Rs. 7.80 per 200m | Night: Rs. 11.70 per 200m. Always convert km to metres first.
Waiting Charge
Applied when the taxi is idle. Day: Rs. 7.80 per 2 min | Night: Rs. 11.70 per 2 min. Divide rate by 2 then multiply by minutes.
🇳🇵 NBSM — Nepal Bureau of Standards & Metrology
NBSM sets the taxi fare rates used across metered taxis in Nepal. For every trip, an initial (minimum) charge is applied, followed by a distance fare charged every 200 metres, and a waiting charge for idle time. Night rates (9pm – 6am) are higher than day rates (6am – 9pm).
Total Fare = Initial Charge + Distance Fare + Waiting Charge
📋 NBSM Taxi Fare Rate Table
| Component | Day Rate (6am – 9pm) | Night Rate (9pm – 6am) |
|---|---|---|
| Initial (minimum) charge | Rs. 14 | Rs. 21 |
| Per 200 metre fare | Rs. 7.80 | Rs. 11.70 |
| Additional fare per kilometre | Rs. 39 | Rs. 58.50 |
| Fare of initial 1 km | Rs. 53 | Rs. 79.50 |
| Waiting charge per 2 minutes | Rs. 7.80 | Rs. 11.70 |
Note: rates are fixed by NBSM and may be revised over time.
🔄 How Is Your Taxi Fare Calculated?
1
Note the Initial Charge
Minimum: Rs. 14 (day) or Rs. 21 (night) — charged at the very start of every trip.
2
Convert Distance to Metres
km × 1000 = metres. Then apply: (rate per 200m ÷ 200) × total metres.
3
Calculate Waiting Charge
(rate per 2 min ÷ 2) × total waiting minutes.
4
Add All Three Components
Total Fare = Initial Charge + Distance Fare + Waiting Charge.
📐 Master Formula
Total Fare = Initial Charge + Distance Fare + Waiting Charge
All three components always add together to give the final taxi fare.
📐 Formula 1 — Distance Fare
Distance Fare = Rate per 200m200 × metres
Day: 7.80200 × metres = 0.039 × metres
Night: 11.70200 × metres = 0.0585 × metres
⚠️ Always convert km → metres first: km × 1000
📐 Formula 2 — Waiting Charge
Waiting = Rate per 2 min2 × minutes
Day: 7.802 × min = 3.90 × minutes
Night: 11.702 × min = 5.85 × minutes
Divide the 2-min rate by 2 to get the per-minute rate.
📐 Formula 3 — Finding Distance from Total
Distance Fare = Total − Initial − Waiting
Distance = Distance FareRate per metre
Day: Dist Fare ÷ 0.039 | Night: Dist Fare ÷ 0.0585
Reverse-calculate when total fare and waiting time are given.
📐 Formula 4 — Day vs Night at a Glance
Day (6am–9pm): Initial Rs. 14 | Per metre Rs. 0.039 | Per minute wait Rs. 3.90
Night (9pm–6am): Initial Rs. 21 | Per metre Rs. 0.0585 | Per minute wait Rs. 5.85
Night rates are 1.5× the day rates.
📊 Quick Reference Table
| Component | Day Rate (6am–9pm) | Night Rate (9pm–6am) |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Charge | Rs. 14 | Rs. 21 |
| Per 200m fare | Rs. 7.80 | Rs. 11.70 |
| Per metre fare | Rs. 0.039 | Rs. 0.0585 |
| Per 2 min waiting | Rs. 7.80 | Rs. 11.70 |
| Per minute waiting | Rs. 3.90 | Rs. 5.85 |
| Total for first 1 km | Rs. 53 | Rs. 79.50 |
Example 1 of 3
Bimalakumari took a taxi to travel 6 km from Balkhu to Putalisadak. Initial charge Rs. 14, per 200m Rs. 7.80, waiting 10 minutes at Rs. 7.80 per 2 minutes. How much did she pay?
Distance = 6 km
Initial = Rs. 14
Per 200m = Rs. 7.80
Waiting = 10 min
✏️ SOLUTION
1
Initial charge = Rs. 14
2
Distance = 6 km = 6000 m
Distance Fare = 7.80200 × 6000 = Rs. 234
Distance Fare = 7.80200 × 6000 = Rs. 234
3
Waiting = 7.802 × 10 = Rs. 39
4
Total = 14 + 234 + 39 = Rs. 287
✅ Total Fare = Rs. 14 + Rs. 234 + Rs. 39 = Rs. 287
Example 2 of 3
Sanjaya pays Rs. 238.50 with 10 min waiting. Initial Rs. 14, per 200m Rs. 7.80, per 2 min Rs. 7.80. Find the distance travelled.
Total = Rs. 238.50
Waiting = 10 min
Initial = Rs. 14
Per 200m = Rs. 7.80
✏️ SOLUTION
1
Waiting = 7.802 × 10 = Rs. 39
2
Distance Fare = 238.50 − 14 − 39 = Rs. 185.50
3
Distance = 185.500.039 ≈ 4756 m ≈ 4.76 km
✅ Distance ≈ 4.76 km
Example 3 of 3
Phaniya pays Rs. 1027.20 with 16 min waiting (night rate). Initial Rs. 21, per 200m Rs. 11.70, per 2 min Rs. 11.70. Find distance.
Total = Rs. 1027.20
Waiting = 16 min
Initial = Rs. 21
Per 200m = Rs. 11.70
✏️ SOLUTION
1
Waiting = 11.702 × 16 = Rs. 93.60
2
Distance Fare = 1027.20 − 21 − 93.60 = Rs. 912.60
3
Distance = 912.600.0585 = 15600 m = 15.6 km
✅ Distance = 15.6 km
